NATE Advocates for Full Recognition of Polytechnic Graduates in Nigeria

The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has called for the full recognition of polytechnic graduates in Nigeria, addressing what it describes as a growing marginalization of polytechnic education. This appeal was made during an induction and awards presentation ceremony held in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at The Polytechnic of Ibadan.

The event, themed ‘The Emerging Technologist,’ featured a keynote address from Dr. D.A. Oke, Head of the Department at the Faculty of Engineering, The Polytechnic of Ibadan. Dr. Oke expressed concerns over the trend of converting polytechnics into universities in Nigeria, contrasting it with practices in countries like Germany and China, where universities are being converted into polytechnics to better meet technological demands.

Dr. Oke highlighted that this reverse trend could hinder Nigeria's technological advancement. He stressed the crucial role of polytechnic graduates in national development and criticized the Nigerian government’s failure to recognize these graduates adequately, contrary to the vision of the institutions' founders.

Udoatan praised the new inductees for their ingenuity and commitment, urging them to contribute meaningfully to societal progress and innovation. He also encouraged the NATE Oyo State chapter to continue fostering innovation for economic sustainability, ensuring Nigeria benefits from emerging technological trends.
