Nigeria Unveils New Basic Education Curriculum Focusing on Skills, Values, and Digital Innovation
The 68th National Council on Education Meeting in Abuja has marked a significant turning point for Nigeria's education system, with the introduction of a new basic education curriculum set to roll out by October 2024. The curriculum aims to equip students with essential skills for the modern economy, emphasizing innovation, digital technology, and entrepreneurship.
Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced the curriculum's focus on developing knowledge, skills, and values in students. "Our nation's future depends on innovation, digital technology, and entrepreneurship," he stated, highlighting the importance of aligning education with national productivity.
A major shift towards digitalization was also announced by Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, who revealed that all paperwork related to education will be digitalized. Attendees of the meeting were provided with tablets, symbolizing the commitment to a fully digital education system.
Prof. Mamman further elaborated on the comprehensive Nigeria Education Transformation Agenda, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision. This agenda includes key areas such as Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teacher Training, and Skills Acquisition.
In recognition of outstanding performance, gifts were presented to the Commissioners of Education from Enugu, Borno, Kano, Ebonyi, Yobe, Cross River, FCT, and Ondo, acknowledging their efforts in advancing the education sector. Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu reaffirmed the government's commitment to revitalizing the education system to meet 21st-century challenges through digital technology and entrepreneurship.
