Chekwube Uchea, a determined Nigerian graduate from the University of Liverpool, has reached a significant milestone by earning a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from the University’s Management School with Merit. Uchea's achievement is a testament to her resilience and dedication, overcoming numerous challenges as an international student in the UK.

Earlier this year, Uchea was awarded the esteemed UK Global Talent Endorsement, a recognition granted to individuals who exhibit exceptional leadership or potential leadership in their fields. This endorsement is a crucial step towards securing a Global Talent visa, which enables talented professionals to work in the UK.

Reflecting on her journey, Uchea shared her initial struggles upon arriving in the UK in 2021, including various survival jobs to support herself. Her roles ranged from working as a cleaner and event steward to positions as a healthcare assistant and supermarket attendant. Despite these challenges, her perseverance led to her notable academic and professional achievements.

“The endorsement as a UK Global Talent is such a big win for me, and I’m so grateful to God,” Uchea expressed. “Looking back at the fears, struggles, and challenges I went through, I realize that taking the risk of coming to the UK as a self-funded student was one of the biggest decisions of my life.”

The UK Global Talent visa allows individuals with exceptional skills to work in the UK, provided they receive an endorsement from a designated body, such as Tech Nation for those in the digital technology sector. Uchea attributed her success to her storytelling skills, which played a key role in her endorsement application. Her compelling personal statement, crafted with authenticity and vulnerability, was crucial in securing the endorsement.

“Imposter syndrome was real for me, and I often felt I wasn’t talented or skilled enough to apply. However, I focused on my strengths, especially my storytelling abilities, which have opened doors to many global opportunities,” Uchea noted.

Uchea encourages future applicants to embrace their unique stories and be candid about their personal struggles. “Your personal statement is critical in getting an endorsement, so don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Share your WHYs, your passion, and how you’ve persevered through tough challenges,” she advised.
