Nigerian Man Achieves Academic Triumph: Resigns Job, Moves Abroad, and Earns PhD from Prestigious UK University

Segun Popoola, a Nigerian scholar, has earned a PhD in Information and Communications Engineering from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.

Popoola's academic journey began at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Nigeria, where he graduated with a first-class degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He then earned a Master's degree in Information and Communication Engineering from Covenant University, also in Nigeria.

Following his Master's degree, Popoola resigned from his job in Nigeria to pursue further studies in the UK. He moved with his family after securing a conditional scholarship to study at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Popoola’s wife, IniOluwa Afolabi, described their journey as moving from the known to the unknown. In a LinkedIn post, she praised her husband for his perseverance and support, which extended to her own academic and professional development.

"I celebrate him today because, as overwhelming as the journey was, he took time out to invest in my development, was patient with my growth process, and provided all the necessary resources to refine and bring out the research potentials in me," she wrote.

Afolabi also credited Popoola with helping her achieve her own academic successes. "Today, I can say he is the one who made me have a name in Google Scholar with a few publications indexed in reputable journals. He taught me the essence of volunteering, collaboration, writing publications, and provided objective internal review to all the articles and scholarship applications I've made," she added.

Dr. Segun Popoola's research, titled "Federated Deep Learning for Botnet Detection in IoT Networks," was fully funded by Cyraatek Ltd and the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University. He expressed gratitude to God, his supervisory team, sponsors, and family for their support.
