Nigeria's Unity to be Strengthened through Promotion of Indigenous Languages, Says Bayero University  Kano VC  Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas

The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, has emphasized the crucial role of indigenous languages in promoting Nigeria's unity.

Speaking at the 1st International Conference on Nupe Language, Abbas highlighted the importance of developing and promoting indigenous languages to strengthen the bonds among Nigeria's diverse ethnic groups .

Abbas encouraged participants to share insights, promote language study, and provide solutions to pedagogical challenges. He noted that cross-fertilization of ideas will promote cultural exchange, preserve linguistic heritage, and contribute to the social and intellectual development of the Nupe kingdom.

The conference, organized by the Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation, and Folklore, aimed to explore the potential of Nupe language in knowledge development. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammed Idris, represented by Alhaji Jibrin Baba Ndace, emphasized the critical role of indigenous languages in shaping national identity.

BUK's commitment to community service through academic research and educational development was also highlighted. The university has conducted several international conferences, including the 2nd Kanuri International Conference in 2023, and plans to host a national workshop to actualize recommendations from a roundtable discussion on translation problems bedeviling media organizations.

By promoting indigenous languages, Nigeria can foster greater unity, preserve cultural heritage, and promote intellectual development.
