NOUN Headquarters Hosts Launch of Nigeria's First Public Defibrillator

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) headquarters in Abuja has officially commissioned Nigeria's first public defibrillator, inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmud, on Wednesday, September 16, 2024.
This event marked the launch of the “Bring Back to Life” initiative by the Nigerian Cardiac Society, aimed at equipping Nigerians with Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills to reduce fatalities from sudden cardiac arrest.
In her speech, Dr. Mahmud praised the initiative as a model of public-private collaboration, urging citizens to embrace healthy living. Prof. B.A. Animashaun, a paediatric cardiologist, highlighted the importance of timely intervention during emergencies, stressing that many deaths could be prevented with basic life-saving skills.
NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, expressed pride in hosting the launch and emphasized the program's potential to save lives. Dr. Akinyemi Aje, Chairman of the Steering Committee, noted that the initiative aims to make CPR training accessible to all Nigerians.
