NSUK Centre for Gender Studies Celebrates Father’s Day, Promotes Responsible Fatherhood

The Centre for Gender Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in collaboration with Keffi Local Government Council, has commemorated Father’s Day with a public awareness campaign and community celebration themed “Fatherhood as a Force for Good.”

Held at NSUK, the event brought together traditional rulers, government officials, academics, fathers, families, and community members to highlight the critical role fathers play in family and national development. Activities began Monday with the Father’s Cup Football Match and concluded Tuesday with speeches, awards, and community engagement.

Representing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Mohammad Maikano Ari described fatherhood as a transformative force anchored on responsibility, compassion, integrity, and faith. He urged fathers to support the education, inclusion, and empowerment of their children, especially the girl-child, and to serve as moral guides.

The keynote address was delivered by the Emir of Keffi, HRH Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, titled _“Fatherhood as a Force for Good: Reclaiming the Father’s Role in Building Families, Communities and a Nation Worth Inheriting.”_ The Emir described fatherhood as a sacred trust that goes beyond provision, stressing emotional presence, mentorship, and active participation.  

“A child needs a home, and the difference between a home and a house is the presence of fathers who spend quality time with their children and provide mentorship,” he said. He warned that society pays a heavy price when fathers are absent physically or morally.

Acting Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Dr. Comfort Adokwe Obed, paid tribute to fathers for their sacrifices and resilience, calling them indispensable partners in raising responsible citizens. Keffi LGC Chairman Hon. Ahmad Idris Damagani, represented by Council Secretary Comrade Isah Adamu, lauded the NSUK-LGC partnership and reaffirmed support for family welfare initiatives.

Highlights included football awards, performances by NSUK Staff Demonstration School pupils, interactive games, and a group photograph symbolizing stakeholders’ resolve to promote responsible fatherhood and stronger communities.
