NSUK Hosts Sensitization Town Hall Meeting on Gender Security and Sexual Harassment Prevention

Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Center for Gender Studies, in collaboration with the Gender Mobile Initiative NGO and the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), organized a sensitization program aimed at promoting gender security and the prevention of sexual harassment.

 

The sensitization Town Hall Meeting themed "A Campaign Against Sexual Harassment; Making NSUK a Safe Learning & Environment Be Wise My Gender!!!" which was held on Thursday 20th February 2025, at the Assembly Hall had the active participation of students and various stakeholders of the University Assembly.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor Theophilus D. Lagi, emphasized the importance of utilizing the resources available at the event. He encouraged all attendees to leverage the insights and expertise shared by the distinguished resource persons, as the initiative seeks to empower both students and staff in promoting gender security and preventing sexual harassment within and outside the university environment.

 

Earlier, in her welcome address, the Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Professor Hau'wau Mainoma, expressed gratitude to all collaborating partners, and members of the University community for their support. She reiterated the University’s commitment to upholding its Zero Tolerance Policy on Sexual Harassment and highlighted the institution’s ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all.

The program featured presentations from the Executive Chairman of Keffi Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Idris Ahmad Damagani who was represented by Mr. Samuel Mallam, Programs Manager of Gender Mobile Initiative, Maryam Mukthar Ali, the Research and Policy Lead Dr. Feyishola Kadiri, and a video presentation on Bystander Intervention by the Dr. Ernest Ogezi of Gender Mobile Initiative. Also, Speakers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps included, the HOD Intelligence Lafia DCC, Sarah Irukera, the Head of Gender of the NSCDC Lafia Command, Eneh Rhoda, and a Presentation by the Deputy Director, Academics of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Centre for Gender Studies, Mrs. Ochanya Lamai.

In her vote of thanks, the Deputy Director Programs of the Centre for Gender Studies Dr. Comfort Adokwe-Obed  appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, the NSCDC, the Gender Mobile Initiative, and all attendees for their participation she reaffirmed the University ’s commitment to fostering an environment free from gender-based violence and harassment.

 

The sensitization program marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, to promote gender equality, enhance awareness on gender security, and create a safer campus for all members of the university community.
