The NYSC Osun State Gender Desk Officer, Mrs Salawu Kehinde, addressed the 2023 Batch B Stream 2 Corps Members on the importance of gender balance and equity in the workplace.
Myschoolnews reports during the sensitisation lecture at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede on Monday, participants displayed placards promoting gender equality and addressing issues such as rape, stigmatization, and harmful traditional practices. Salawu encouraged Corps Members to be vocal about these issues during their Community Development Service (CDS) activities.
Salawu emphasized that the NYSC management is dedicated to achieving gender equality and eliminating gender discrimination among Corps Members, with the goal of creating a society free from all forms of biases.
“Gender equality is a fundamental human right that must be upheld. Opportunities, responsibilities, and rights should be available to all genders equally”, she said.
She discussed the involvement of females in political activities and urged them to take on leadership roles and stop “settling for deputy or assistant positions as seen in the platoon elections".
Salawu stressed the importance of dressing well, as it reflects how one is perceived. She reiterated that both men and women have rights, and everyone should work towards ending child molestation, abuse, and child labour. The campaign against harmful practices like child marriage was equally underscored.
Salawu concluded by urging Corps Members to maintain gender balance and actively promote gender equality during their service year, especially through their CDS initiatives.
