OAU Management to Reconsider Three-Week Break; Students Permitted to Remain in Hostels

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) may reduce the recently announced three-week mid-semester break following successful negotiations with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The breakthrough came after a high-level engagement between the NANS Southwest Zone D leadership and the University Management, led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Akinfala Oluropo. The intervention was prompted by growing welfare concerns and reports of students being stranded following the sudden announcement of the break.

According to a statement released on Friday by the NANS Southwest Coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah, the University has agreed to the following measures to alleviate the plight of the students:

Management has officially rescinded any directive for the forced evacuation of students. Those currently residing in their halls of residence are permitted to remain on campus until the official resumption date.

Provision of Essential Utilities: To ensure a conducive living environment, the University assured that the supply of water and electricity will be sustained in all occupied hostels throughout the break period.

Review of Break Duration: Discussions remain ongoing regarding the potential shortening of the three-week hiatus to ensure the academic calendar remains on track.

The NANS leadership commended the university administration for its responsiveness, noting that many students were unable to secure alternative accommodation or transportation funds on such short notice.

This agreement marks a significant de-escalation of tensions on campus, providing much-needed relief to the student body while maintaining institutional stability.
