Dr. Nsikak Akpan, a lecturer at Foreign Links College of Health Sciences, Moro, Osun State, has set a new world record for the longest marathon lecture, achieving an impressive 150-hour continuous teaching session.
Dr. Akpan surpassed the previous record held by Prof. Arvin Mishra of India, who in 2014 delivered a lecture for 139 hours, 52 minutes, and 42 seconds. The Nigerian lecturer exceeded this milestone at 4:30 am on Sunday, after reaching 142 hours. He then met his target of 150 hours around 2:30 pm, sparking jubilant celebrations from his audience, which included students and members of the media.
Before embarking on the challenge, Dr. Akpan had his application, reference number 240427100506lml, approved by Guinness World Records. He faced several challenges during the lecture, including a medical emergency on Friday, but persevered after receiving treatment.
Speaking about his journey, Akpan explained, “It took us two to three months of planning. When I fell sick, I didn't consider quitting. I was determined to succeed, and after being cleared to continue, I resumed without hesitation.”
Despite financial concerns raised by some, Akpan successfully achieved his goal, demonstrating resilience and dedication. "Challenges will always come, but to succeed, you must keep going. I don’t feel tired; I feel like I want to continue," he stated.
