Peter Obi Backs Nurses Seeking Opportunities Abroad, Donates N20 Million to Nursing College

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed his support for Nigerian nurses seeking better opportunities abroad. During a recent donation of N20 million to St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, Obi emphasized that there is nothing wrong with aspiring for greener pastures outside the country.

Of the total donation, N10 million is earmarked for the midwifery department, while the remaining N10 million will support the nursing department. Obi highlighted the critical role of education and healthcare, referring to them as essential currencies for future transactions.

With Nigeria's population exceeding 200 million, Obi argued against restricting individuals from pursuing international opportunities. Instead, he advocated for the training of more professionals, asserting that their remittances could significantly contribute to the nation's economy. “What we are doing is not charity, but an investment in you,” he stated. “We need to invest in knowledge and health because it is the future. Investing in you will ensure your greatness. Your profession is lucrative, and you are being sought after all over the world.”

Obi also addressed the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, urging them not to deny any nurse seeking to leave the country for better prospects. “Let those who want to go out do so, and let those who wish to stay here remain, as diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation,” he added.

Reflecting on his philanthropic efforts, Obi mentioned, “If you see me going around donating to educational and health institutions, it is because we want to make life better for you all. I came here to donate to you. It is not proper for children not to have the opportunity to attend university while I sit down and add more chieftaincy titles to my name. That is not how to develop the future.”

Looking forward, Obi announced plans to visit a hospital in Anyingba, Kogi State, on Tuesday to assist with accreditation requirements, followed by a visit to Kaduna State on Wednesday. His commitment to supporting education and healthcare continues to resonate as he advocates for the professional development of Nigerian nurses and midwives.
