Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has donated N50 million to Shanahan University, a newly established institution in Onitsha. The donation was made during the university's official inauguration ceremony, where Obi underscored the growing significance of knowledge over natural resources like oil, emphasizing that knowledge is the currency of the future.

In his address, Obi commended the founder of the university, His Grace, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha, for his visionary initiative. He noted that education remains pivotal to the future of humanity and stressed the need for society to prioritize preparing for tomorrow through educational advancement. He also lauded the Catholic Church's longstanding tradition of establishing high-quality educational institutions globally and urged the public to support the Church's ongoing efforts to improve education in Nigeria.

Archbishop Valerian Okeke expressed his appreciation for Obi's generous contribution, recalling his significant support for missionary-owned institutions during his tenure as governor. The Archbishop also announced that all students at Shanahan University would have free internet access until January 2025, enhancing their learning experience.

The Vice-Chancellor of Shanahan University, Professor Obi Oguejiofor, highlighted the institution's goal of becoming one of Nigeria's leading universities. He disclosed that all of the university's over 200 pioneer students are currently enjoying tuition-free education for the ongoing academic session, reflecting the institution's commitment to providing accessible and quality education.
