The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers for their alleged involvement in the death of a Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin student, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola. The incident occurred on September 4, 2024, during a fuel hike protest by students, and has since drawn widespread public condemnation, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to transfer the case to police headquarters in Abuja for thorough investigation.

The dismissed officers, identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, faced charges including leaving their duty post, corrupt practices, and engaging in unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority. According to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the officers were found guilty after a comprehensive investigation and internal disciplinary trial.

“The three officers have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, with effect from October 4, 2024, and will be arraigned soon,” the statement read. “This decisive action underscores the unwavering commitment of the IGP to uphold justice, professionalism, and accountability across the Nigeria Police Force.”

Ejire-Adeyemi added that the IGP's leadership is dedicated to ensuring that officers maintain ethical standards, with stringent consequences for breaches that result in loss of life.

The Kwara State Police Command, led by Commissioner Victor Olaiya, extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. “We share in their grief and remain committed to providing them with support during this difficult period,” she said.
