Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi Formally Assumes Office as UniAbuja Vice-Chancellor
Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi has formally assumed office as the eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), following a handover ceremony held today, Thursday, December 11, 2025.
Professor Fawehinmi, a distinguished Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology, took over the leadership mantle from Professor Mathew Adamu, who had been serving in an acting capacity since August 2025.
The new Vice-Chancellor was appointed by the University's 11th Governing Council during its 80th Extraordinary Meeting on November 7, 2025. Although his five-year, non-renewable tenure was initially set to commence on February 10, 2026, he has assumed duties earlier to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
In his inaugural address, Professor Fawehinmi pledged to reposition the institution for academic excellence, enhanced research output, innovation, and institutional stability. He emphasized collaboration with all stakeholders, including principal officers, faculty leadership, student representatives, and unions, to align priorities for the University's next strategic phase.
Before this appointment, Professor Fawehinmi served as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University and held several leadership positions at the University of Port Harcourt, including two terms as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). He is a respected scholar and an innovator, holding a federal government patent for his invention of the AMRG Anthropometry Chair for Dimensional Body Measurements.
The university community has widely celebrated his assumption of office, expressing optimism for a successful and impactful tenure that will steer UniAbuja to greater heights.
