Rivers State University (RSU) on Thursday, January 15, 2026, inducted 27 newly qualified medical doctors at the 2nd Induction Ceremony of the College of Medical Sciences, reaffirming the University’s steady rise as a centre of excellence in medical education.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Health and Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, described the induction as a strategic boost to the state’s healthcare system, noting that government investment in the College is aimed at producing doctors who will serve as public health leaders. She urged the inductees to be the human face of healthcare in Rivers State and to contribute to reducing maternal mortality and strengthening primary healthcare.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Hon. Okey Wali, SAN, represented by Emeritus Prof. Joseph Ajienka, expressed the Governing Council’s pride in the University’s progress, charging the new doctors to complement the infrastructure provided by government with strong character, patriotism, and professional integrity.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described the ceremony as a major milestone in his first year in office. He highlighted RSU’s support for Nigerian medical students displaced by the Ukraine crisis and attributed the University’s record admission quota to academic rigor and transparent assessment processes, urging the inductees to be worthy ambassadors of RSU.
The Registrar and CEO of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, reminded the new doctors that their licenses are a sacred trust, anchored on integrity, lifelong learning, social accountability, and the enduring principle of “do no harm.”
Earlier, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Kenneth Shelu Ordu, reflected on the College’s growth from one faculty to three with over 570 staff, thanking the Visitor of the University and Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, for support that raised the admission quota from 50 to 300.
The ceremony featured a valedictory address by the overall best graduating doctor, Dr. Obu Kingdom Lawrence, and the decoration of a former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Blessing C. Didia, as Medical Elder.
