Sen. Ibrahim Lamido, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has awarded full foreign scholarships to 42 indigent students from Sokoto to study medical and allied sciences in India. The scholarship program covers all expenses, including visa, air tickets, tuition, accommodation, feeding, and monthly stipends for the two-year period.

At the presentation ceremony in Sokoto, Lamido, represented by Dr. Umar Namahe, emphasized that the scholarship program is part of a broader initiative with 100 available slots for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Sokoto East. He stated that the beneficiaries were selected based on integrity and competency tests, including health and drug screenings, to ensure they meet the program's requirements.

“This scholarship covers all expenses needed for these students to study medicine, engineering, allied sciences, and robotics in India,” Lamido explained, adding that the students’ educational journey abroad is fully funded.

Mu’azu Shamaki, who spoke on behalf of the senator, praised the initiative as a step toward enhancing educational access and reducing barriers to quality education in Sokoto. He noted that the scholarship recipients were chosen from the eight local government areas in Sokoto East – Sabon Birni, Rabah, Illela, Gada, Goronyo, Wurno, Gwadabawa, and Isa.

“This program represents Sen. Lamido’s dedication to supporting education, youth empowerment, and economic development in the district,” Shamaki said. “It is an apolitical endeavor aimed at eradicating poverty, encouraging self-reliance, and building a productive future for the youth of Sokoto.”

Shamaki further highlighted Lamido’s various contributions, including providing Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms and paying tuition fees for students in Nigerian institutions, in addition to giving stipends to secondary school students within the senatorial district. He noted that over 2,000 students have benefited from Lamido’s initiatives.

Lamido’s scholarship program not only symbolizes his commitment to educational development but also serves as a call for other political leaders and well-off Nigerians to support similar initiatives that foster youth empowerment and a brighter future for Nigeria.
