Alex Onyia, in collaboration with Sterling Bank, has launched the Sterling Bank National Mathematics Quiz, a nationwide competition aimed at discovering, rewarding, and celebrating Nigeria’s brightest young mathematical talents.
This initiative, which began on June 20, offers students from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) the opportunity to compete online every two weeks for substantial cash prizes. According to the organisers, the prize distribution for each edition of the competition is as follows:
-1st Prize: N500,000
-2nd Prize: N300,000
-3rd Prize: N200,000
This totals N1 million in prizes awarded every two weeks, with an annual commitment of N24 million dedicated to promoting academic excellence among Nigerian students.
Regarding the initiative, Alex Onyia emphasised that the competition is designed not only to reward academic achievement but also to foster a culture that celebrates intelligence, critical thinking, and educational excellence. He highlighted that the competition provides equal opportunities for children across the country, allowing students from urban and rural areas alike to compete on a national stage.

The competition will take place online every two weeks on Saturdays from 6:00 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. Top-performing students will then advance to a live championship session streamed online the following day, where they will tackle advanced mathematical problems in front of a national audience.
To ensure fairness and broaden participation, the organisers have stated that each student will only be eligible to win once, thereby allowing more students to benefit from this initiative.
Additionally, a post-examination review process will enable participants to revisit questions, identify areas for improvement, and enhance their mathematical skills in preparation for future contests.
