Suspected Thief Dies After Mob Action at Bayero University, Kano; One Apprehended
One of three suspected thieves was beaten to death by a mob of students at Bayero University Kano's (BUK) New Campus in the Sa'adu Zungur quarters overnight, while a second was taken into custody by the university's security division. A third suspect is still at large.
According to witnesses, the incident unfolded after the three individuals attempted to threaten students with a cutlass during a theft attempt. In response, a large group of students mobilized to pursue the suspects. One of the men was caught and severely beaten, leading to his death.
University security operatives intervened and successfully rescued a second suspect from the angry crowd before taking him into custody. The third thief managed to evade capture and fled the scene.
This incident is the latest in a series of security concerns that have troubled the university community. In a similar event in 2019, security personnel rescued a motorcycle thief who was being beaten by students at the Yellow Bus park.
BUK management has previously enhanced security protocols, including increasing patrols and requiring identification for entry, in response to such incidents. The university's security division maintains a presence across all campuses and often collaborates with external law enforcement agencies, like the police, on cases involving non-students.
An investigation into the incident is expected to be launched by both the university's security unit and external law enforcement. The apprehended suspect is likely to be handed over to the police for further processing. The university community has been reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
