TETFund Selects LASU for ₦3B South-West Centre of Excellence in AI and Cyber Security

Lagos State University (LASU) has secured a ₦3 billion intervention fund from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) following its selection as the South-West Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Cyber Security.

A high-level TETFund delegation visited the university on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, to conduct a comprehensive readiness assessment. Led by Professor Okechukwu Onyenwe, alongside Deputy Director Dr. Suleiman Zangana and Mrs. Oluwafunto Julius, the team inspected designated facilities and evaluated institutional infrastructure to verify LASU's operational capacity.The Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, officially received the delegation at the Senate Building.

The meeting included Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi and the Centre's Steering Team, led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin.Professor Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude for the selection, describing the approval as a historic milestone.

She assured the delegation that LASU possesses the human resources, governance structures, and institutional capacity required to establish and sustain a world-class technological hub.Speaking on behalf of TETFund, Professor Onyenwe explained that LASU emerged as the regional choice following a rigorous evaluation of its capabilities in AI, cyber security, robotics, and coding. He emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's technological sovereignty, eliminate digital skills gaps, and position Nigerian youth competitively within the global knowledge economy.
