The NYSC Uniform Doesn't Grant You Immunity From the Country's Laws" - Director NWAO Tells Corps Members

The Director National Youth Service Corps  Northwest Area Office, Mr. Amusan Oluwole Julius has informed the 2023 Batch A Stream 1 Corps Members deployed to Osun State and those dislodged from Lagos State that the NYSC uniform does not guarantee nor confer immunity from the laws of the land on them.

Amusan stated that any Corps Member who commits any crime nor engages in electoral malpractice will be prosecuted inline with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Myschoolnews reports he said this while addressing Corps Members at the Multipurpose Hall of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Ede on Tuesday.

Speaking on the forthcoming election, Amusan charged the Corps Members to take the INEC training seriously and ensure they abide by the rules of engagement.

He posited that the National Governing Board and the Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. YD Ahmed have prioritised the safety and welfare of the Corps Members.

According to him, the Board and the DG have embarked on several advocacy visits to Service Chiefs and security agencies to solicit for more security during the election.

He sternly warned Corps Members who would be involved in the electoral process not to compromise on their prospective ad-hoc duties.

“The National Governing Board is not handling your security with kid gloves. Therefore those of you who would be engaged in the election should not entertain fear.

“I want you to familiarize yourselves with the electoral acts. Do the right thing and do not compromise,” he said.

Amusan, who came on an inspection tour of  the State's Orientation Camp expressed his delight after going round the Camp facilities.

Amusan advised the Corps Members to take seriously all what they have learnt and will yet learn on Camp, adding that there were Corps Members in the past who, through the SAED trainings, have become employers of labour and wealth creators.

Amusan continued: “You will all agree with me that there are no jobs in Nigeria. Consider your background and do not let anyone distract you.

“You may not be able to learn all in Camp, that is why we have the in-camp and post-camp training so that at the end of your training you will be independent".

While warning the Corps Members against unauthorised journeys, Amusan said that Osun State is a very compact State and therefore they should desist from lobbying or  inducing their postings to the urban centers alone. He implored them to allow God to choose for them as He alone knows where their goodness and blessings lie.

He enjoined them to remain in their State of deployment as the times are perilous, urging them to leverage on technology to keep in touch with their loved ones rather than embarking on frivolous journeys. He said the well-being and safety of the Corps Members is sacrosanct to the Scheme and therefore, they should be good ambassadors of the Scheme and their families by adhering to the rules and regulations of the Scheme.

Amusan commended the State Coordinator for her giant strides in the State witnessed during the inspection of Camp facilities and the commissioning of the multipurpose hall extension constructed by the State Coordinator. He also commended the Scheme's management and staff in the State for standing in locoparentis to the Corps Members and for creating a serene and conducive environment for them.

He further commended the 2023 Batch A Stream 1 Corps Members for comporting themselves well. He said: “I can see that you're responsible Corps Members.”

He congratulated them for the success of their undergraduate academic pursuit. “Some of your colleagues are not here either by indolence or unforseen circumstances,” Amusan added.

He eulogised parents and guardians of the Corps Members for their unrelenting efforts in seeing to the education of their wards in the various tertiary institutions within and outside the country which qualified them for mobilisation.

Earlier, the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab has lauded the Corps Members for their comportment, discipline and for showing love to one another. She described the State as a place where love and peace reign.

She said this while briefing the Director on the comportment, disposition and welfare of the Corps Members. She stated that both Corps Members deployed to the State and those dislodged from Lagos State have integrated seamlessly and both have been enjoying the same welfare, comfort and love by all officials.

She apprised the Director of the synergy that exist between the officials of the Scheme and the collaborating agencies specially commending the security agencies for going extra mile to ensure the safety of lives and properties of course participants.

Highlights of the visit include the commissioning of the hall extension constructed by the State Coordinator, giving of cash gifts to Band, OBS, Quarter Guard, Cook and the Dance Troupe and also a family meeting with NYSC officials
