UI DVC Academic Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju Retires
The University of Ibadan’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, has retired from the institution’s service today, Wednesday, August 13, 2025, upon attaining the statutory retirement age of 70.
Prof. Baiyeroju, who assumed office as DVC (Academic) on November 9, 2021, is a renowned Professor of Ophthalmology and Honorary Consultant at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
Born in Benin City to the late David Olatunde and Marian Olutunde Agbeja, she hails from Ijesha in Osun State. She began her education at UMC Demonstration School, Ibadan, and later attended St. Anne’s School, Molete, before completing A-Level studies at Queen’s School, Ibadan, and Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro, Ogun State.
In 1974, she gained admission to Nigeria’s premier medical school at the University of Ibadan, earning her MBBS in 1979. She went on to train at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow, obtaining the Diploma in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (1982) and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (1985). She later received Fellowships from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), the West African College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, and the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.
Joining the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine in 1987, she became a Professor of Ophthalmology in 1998. Her subspecialty is Paediatric Ophthalmology, with additional interest in Glaucoma. She has held several leadership positions, including Acting Head of Department (1995–1997), Head of Department (1999–2003), and Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine (2006–2010).
A committed researcher, Prof. Baiyeroju has led multiple grants, including a WHO-funded Eye Care for Children project in Oyo State (2004–2008) and the “Seeing is Believing” blindness prevention initiative in Southwest Nigeria (2017–2020), funded by Standard Chartered Bank and executed by CBM Nigeria.
Her service to the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) spans decades, including roles as Faculty Chairman of Ophthalmology (2003–2007), Council Member (2007–2013), Assistant Honorary Treasurer (2013–2017), and Honorary Treasurer (2017–2021).
Beyond academics, Prof. Baiyeroju is a decorated sportswoman. She won gold in high jump at the 1977 ECOWAS Games and ranked as Nigeria’s number four squash player in 1978. She received the University of Ibadan’s Best Female Athlete scholarship throughout her medical studies and was inducted into the university’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. She was also named “Brownite of Honour” in 1997 by Alexander Brown Hall.
With over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in numerous international conferences, Prof. Baiyeroju leaves a legacy of academic excellence, leadership, and service.
She is married to Brigadier General Akin Baiyeroju (Rtd.), and they are blessed with children.
