UMC Delegation Pays Condolence Visit to Family of Late Professor Bidmos, Honours His Legacy
The University of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) delegation paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Professor Muritala Aderemi Bidmos in Arepo, Ogun State, following his passing on March 3, 2025.

A high-powered delegation from the University of Lagos Muslim Community (UMC) visited the residence of the late Professor Muritala Aderemi Bidmos in Arepo, Ogun State, to pay their respects and console his family following his passing on Monday, March 3, 2025. Professor Bidmos, the immediate-past Chief Imam of the University and former Dean of the Faculty of Education, was remembered as a towering figure in the institution’s religious and academic landscape.
Led by UMC Chairman, Professor Abdul-Hakeem Olaniyan, and Chief Imam, Professor Ismail Musa, the delegation included executive members, congregants, and representatives from the Alasalatu group (women’s wing). They offered prayers, support, and solidarity to the bereaved family, emphasizing the enduring impact of Professor Bidmos' contributions to the university and the broader Muslim community.
The visit began on a solemn note with a Quranic recitation by the Resident Imam of the University Mosque, Dr. Abdulraheem Bashir, followed by an opening dua led by Dr. Mustapha Ibrahim. The gathering collectively prayed for the departed soul, seeking Allah’s mercy and eternal peace for him, while also asking for strength and comfort for his widow, Alhaja Rahamotullah Bidmos, and the entire family.
In his condolence message, Professor Musa highlighted Professor Bidmos’ unwavering dedication to faith, unity, and spiritual guidance within the university. He described him as a leader who played a crucial role in strengthening the institution’s religious fabric, mentoring students, and promoting compassion among staff and students alike.
Professor Muibi Omolayo Opeloye, a close ally and visiting professor at Osun State University’s Department of Religious Studies, praised Professor Bidmos as a proactive and determined individual whose purposeful life and commitment to Islamic education were evident throughout his career. Similarly, Imam Jubril Oyekan, the Wakeel of the Islamic Education Trust (IET), emphasized the inevitability of death and the importance of leaving behind a meaningful legacy.
Representing the UMC women’s wing, Alhaja Misah acknowledged the late professor’s leadership and the inspiration he provided to generations of students and scholars. She noted that his dedication to education and religious guidance would remain a beacon of strength for those who had the privilege of knowing him.
During the visit, the eldest son of the late professor, Professor Mubarak Bidmos, expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support from the Muslim community. In an emotional address, he announced the establishment of an endowment fund for indigent students at the University of Lagos—a cause his father was deeply passionate about. He encouraged contributions to the fund to ensure that his father’s legacy of supporting underprivileged students would continue to thrive.
Professor Muritala Aderemi Bidmos joined the University of Lagos in 1981 as a faculty member in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education (IRS Unit), Faculty of Education. He was appointed Chief Imam in 1995 and served in the role with distinction until his retirement in 2018. His tenure was marked by remarkable leadership, religious mentorship, and philanthropic initiatives that left a lasting impact on the university community.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence will endure through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, who continue to uphold his values and commitment to education and service.
