UNIABUJA Hosts Academic Exchange with US Law Experts on Combatting Financial Crimes

The University of Abuja recently hosted an academic exchange program with the University of California College of Law, San Francisco, from July 3-4, 2024. This event was part of a broader initiative funded by the United States Embassy in Abuja aimed at strengthening ties between Nigerian and American universities.

The program featured a public lecture on "Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing in Developing Economies," delivered by Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja. She emphasized the global challenges posed by money laundering and terrorism financing and their impact on national security, economic stability, and legal systems.

Notable attendees included Demarris R. Evans, Senior Assistant District Attorney from California, Dr. Sam Chukwuka Onyeka, a representative of the EFCC Chairman, and representatives from the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). The event was also attended by key members of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) from Garki, Gwagwalada, and Bwari.

The lecture underscored the need for joint action against financial crimes and the importance of developing comprehensive electronic case management systems for efficient justice delivery. Participants appreciated the US Embassy’s support for the program and expressed readiness to implement the knowledge gained.
