UNILAG Bolsters Nigeria’s Innovation Ecosystem with Launch of AI-Focused "UniPod"

In a landmark development for Nigeria’s technological advancement, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) officially launched its University Innovation Pod (UniPod) on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. The facility is set to serve as a premier hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cross-disciplinary research, positioning the institution as a leader in the nation’s innovation drive.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, GCON, represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, performed the formal unveiling.

In his keynote remarks, the Vice President commended UNILAG for its proactive approach to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He noted that the UniPod project aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to digital transformation and the empowerment of Nigerian youths through cutting-edge technology.

The UNILAG UniPod is designed to provide a collaborative space where students, faculty, and industry experts can prototype ideas, engage in AI-driven problem-solving, and develop scalable solutions for national challenges. The launch marks a "red-letter day" for the university, reinforcing its status as a breeding ground for tech talent and entrepreneurial ventures.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, expressed her gratitude to the Federal Government and development partners, emphasizing that the UniPod will bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application.

By integrating AI focus into the UniPod’s core operations, UNILAG aims to drive innovation in key sectors such as healthcare, finance, and sustainable infrastructure, ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global digital economy.

The ceremony was attended by key stakeholders from the presidency, academic leaders, and representatives from the tech industry, all hailing the initiative as a transformative step for higher education in Africa.
