A collaborative approach to ensure safe environment across UNILAG  campus, the UNILAG Fire Services (UFS) Unit held a fire prevention training and drill session with food vendors.

Spurred by the need for a collaborative approach in ensuring a safe environment across the University of Lagos campus, the UNILAG Fire Services (UFS) Unit held a fire prevention training and drill session with food vendors on Thursday, September 7, 2023.

The session which was held at the Jaja Hall Complex axis, provided an avenue for business owners and private individuals to be sensitized on the need to follow safety precautions to prevent fire outbreaks within the university, as well as possess first-rate firefighting equipment within their business premises.

The vendors were taken through Fire Safety Education and Training; Fire Safety Training Goals; and Proper Handling and Storage Procedures for Flammable and Combustible Materials.

Representative of the Acting Head of the UFS Unit, Mr. Ayodeji Oyelami introduced the vendors to fire outbreak rules as well as steps to take during fire outbreaks. He emphasized the importance of proper coordination of response to fire outbreaks, to save lives and properties.

Mr. Oyelami who was also accompanied by other UFS officers averred that the sensitization exercise was initiated to expose stakeholders within the university community to preventive knowledge on fire outbreaks, which is critical to saving lives and protecting businesses.

While speaking on the danger of installing gas cylinders in the kitchen as a bad practice with regard to safety, Mr. Oyelami stressed the need for all shop owners particularly food vendors to have at least one CO2 or Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) fire extinguisher as an emergency response system, in case of fire outbreak.

In his presentation, the Assistant Chief Safety Officer, Mr Etang Andrew highlighted the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in fire prevention, to avert grievous consequences and gruesome loses that could result from fire incidents.

Thereafter, the practical session was held and the vendors were shown several ways to curb fire outbreaks. These include the application of traditional methods like the use of sand and water mixed with detergent in non-electrical outbreaks and the use of bunches of leaves to subdue fire.
