The University of Lagos (UNILAG) management has clarified the reason behind their request for students to bring their mattresses and personal items to campus. According to the university's administration, this measure is being implemented due to health concerns, as they are currently undergoing renovations in the university's dormitories in preparation for the students' return later this month.

In response to complaints from both parents and students about the recently raised university fees, Alhaja Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the Head of the Information Unit, addressed the issue. She explained that the practice of students providing their bedding materials has been in place for some time and is not a new requirement. The university is also actively working on renovating several hostels, with the goal of completing some of them before students return later this month.

Adejoke further noted that for those hostels where renovation work may not be finished in time, efforts will continue to make the necessary improvements. She emphasized that the university is committed to ensuring that the hostels are comfortable and conducive for the students. In response to concerns that the hostel fees should cover these items, she pointed out the economic challenges in the country and the cost of such items, asserting that a yearly hostel fee of N65,000 is not exorbitant when compared to the rates charged for private accommodations. The university management is taking the welfare of the students into consideration and is actively working to enhance their on-campus living conditions.

It is worth mentioning that UNILAG recently raised various fees, including the hostel fee. Initially set at N25,000, the hostel fee was increased to N100,000 and N120,000, depending on the type of hostel. However, following significant protests by parents and students, the hostel fees were subsequently reduced to a range between N65,000 and N85,000. In comparison, private hostels near UNILAG charge substantially higher rates, with some charging as much as N184,500 for a four-man room and N200,000 for a two-man room.
