UNILAG School of Foundation Studies Welcomes 2024/2025 Students with Orientation on Academic Excellence
The School of Foundation Studies (SFS) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) formally welcomed its newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session with an insightful orientation program held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium.
The School of Foundation Studies (SFS) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) formally welcomed its newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session with an insightful orientation program held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium. Themed “Preparing a Solid Foundation towards Achieving Excellence in University Education,” the event provided valuable guidance to the incoming students on how to succeed in their academic journey.
In his opening remarks, the Director of the School, Prof. Khalid Olajide Adekoya, congratulated the new students and encouraged them to believe in their capabilities. He stressed the importance of punctuality and class attendance, noting that these contribute to their overall assessment.
Former Director of the School, Prof. Solomon Akinboye, highlighted the significance of proper registration and the necessity of attending on-campus lectures. He informed the students about the four sets of exams they would undertake before their Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) assessment.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research) and Board Chairperson of the School, Prof. Bolanle Olufunmilayo Oboh, urged the students to remain focused academically and avoid unofficial tutorial centers. She also advised them to report any medical conditions promptly to prevent complications during exams.

Digital Services: Mrs. Gbemisola Williams of the Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe Centre for Information Technology and Systems (ABS-CITS) provided students with guidance on using the student portal and completing proper documentation.

Healthcare: Dr. Afolabi Adebayo from UNILAG’s Medical Centre outlined available medical services and the Medical Insurance Scheme (Tinship). Mr. Abiodun Yinusa, Medical Records Officer, emphasized the importance of early reporting of health issues.

Student Welfare: Mrs. Janet Aregbesola, Head of the Counselling Unit at the Students Affairs Division, offered advice on preventing drug abuse, while Mr. Gbenga Esan from UNILAG’s Security Unit shared campus safety tips.

International Opportunities: Miss Toyin Ganiyu, representing the Office of International Relations, Partnerships, and Prospects (IRPP), discussed study abroad opportunities available to Foundation students.
The event also featured testimonials from two former SFS students, Miss Oluwatobi Ogunjobi and Mr. Oladipo Adebiyi, who achieved outstanding results. They shared their study strategies, offering inspiration and encouragement to the new students.
Other notable attendees included the former JUPEB Registrar, Prof. Solomon Adewale Okunuga; Deputy Director of the School of Foundation Studies, Dr. Dayo Badejo; and former Deputy Director, Dr. T.O. Onuminya. The orientation set the stage for the new students to embark on a journey toward academic success at UNILAG.
