The University of Lagos Senate celebrated Professor Wole Atoyebi, a distinguished figure in the field of Surgery hailing from Ile Elemona of Ila-Orangun in Osun State. On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, this esteemed institution paid tribute to him as he prepares to retire from his long-standing career in the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos and as a Consultant Surgeon specializing in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Breast surgeries at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. This celebration coincided with Professor Atoyebi's 70th birthday, which is set to take place on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

In her address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, represented the management, staff, and students of UNILAG as she conveyed their heartfelt congratulations to Professor Atoyebi. They commended his illustrious service to the university and his significant contributions to the body of knowledge. The Vice-Chancellor offered her prayers for his continued good health and wished for his longevity to enjoy the rewards of his dedication and hard work.

During the gathering, Professor Atoyebi, who connected via Zoom, expressed his gratitude to the University Senate and the entire UNILAG community for affording him the opportunity for personal and professional growth.

In his own words, he stated, "Distinguished Senate members, you all served as catalysts of the success of my stewardship, and I appreciate you all. I am fulfilled and happy that I had the opportunity to work in this institution of higher learning."

Born on November 9, 1953, Professor Atoyebi embarked on his academic journey at the University of Lagos in 1972, commencing with his Preliminary Medical Course. He officially launched his professional career in 1977 during his internship at the renowned Adeoyo Specialist Hospital in Ibadan. Subsequently, he returned to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his Postgraduate Residency Training, a period spanning from 1980 to 1985.

This dedicated medical expert was appointed Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery at LUTH in June 1988 and ascended to the position of a full Consultant Surgeon in 1990. His academic journey continued as he was appointed as Lecturer 1 in the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine, UNILAG, in October 1992. His career trajectory saw him become a Senior Lecturer in 1997, followed by an appointment as an Associate Professor in October 2000. Finally, in October 2005, the UNILAG Governing Council elevated him to the prestigious rank of a full professor on prima facie basis.

Throughout his career, Professor Atoyebi served the University in various capacities, including a distinguished tenure as the Provost of the College of Medicine from 2009 to 2012. His personal life is marked by a joyful marriage to Dr. Oluwatoyin Olaide Atoyebi, a seasoned medical practitioner hailing from Okeigbo in Ondo State, and their union has been blessed with children and grandchildren.
