The University of Ibadan (UI) Leadership Team, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, conducted an on-site assessment at the University College Hospital (UCH) and the College of Medicine following a devastating explosion that occurred in Ibadan last month.

The team’s visit to UCH aimed to express condolences to the hospital management and assess the extent of damage caused by the blast. The impact of the explosion was severe, affecting both UCH and the College of Medicine.

The Centre for Sustainable Development/Distance Learning Centre (Bodija)  and the Centre for Entrepreneurship were significantly affected by the explosion. The buildings associated with entrepreneurship programs also suffered substantial damage.

Professor Jesse A. Otegbayo, Chief Medical Director of UCH, received the UI Management Team. He described the blast as a tragic event and emphasized the extensive damage to UCH structures. As more offices were opened, additional damage was discovered.

Professor Olayinka Omigbodun, FAS, the Provost of the College of Medicine, accompanied the UI Management Team during their assessment. The College of Medicine and UCH are closely intertwined—the former serving as the laboratory for the latter. Despite their distinct organizational structures under different federal ministries, their interdependence is evident.

The UI Management Team observed the following damage:

  • Oluwole Akande Building
  • B. O. Osuntokun Paul Hendrickse Lecture Halls
  • College of Medicine Education Building
  • Clinical Sciences Building
  • Alexander Brown Hall
  • Carta Building
  • Immunology Building
  • Ayodele Falase Postgraduate Hall
  • IAMRAT Building
  • Department of Virology
  • Oladele Ajose Building
  • Dental Centre

Visible cracks, shattered ceilings, broken window panes, glass doors, and torn electrical wiring raised concerns about the structural integrity of these buildings.
