UNIZIK Appoints Ikechebelu as Acting VC

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, has been announced to oversee the office of the Vice-Chancellor as Professor Charles Esimone’s tenure concludes on June 3rd

 This declaration was made at a special Senate meeting held at the University Auditorium on Monday. With his elevation to the role of acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ikechebelu steps into the spotlight, poised to steer the university’s course in the interim period.

The decision to appoint Ikechebelu is the result of a directive from the National Universities Commission (NUC), as outlined in a circular dated May 28, 2024. The circular, titled “RE: END OF TENURE OF SOME VICE-CHANCELLORS OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES,” instructs outgoing Vice-Chancellors to nominate a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, following the advice of their respective Senates, to temporarily take on the duties of the Vice-Chancellor. 

Being the only deputy vice-chancellor at the institution, Ikechebelu naturally steps into this role.

When addressing the media, Ikechebelu assured that the institution’s administration would take on a “new dimension”. He outlined a clear path to excellence for the university, focusing on initiatives such as lighting-up UNIZIK, tackling insecurity, digitizing processes, and enhancing the aesthetics of the institution.

He pledged to address the power issue as a priority and stated that his administration would introduce a program aimed at ensuring the institution’s security.

Ikechebelu is a professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the University since 2008.
