UNN to Host 7th Chinua Achebe International Conference on Democracy and Development in Africa
The Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has announced the 7th Chinua Achebe International Conference, which will explore critical issues surrounding democracy and development in Africa.
The Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has announced the 7th Chinua Achebe International Conference, which will explore critical issues surrounding democracy and development in Africa.
According to the institute, the conference is driven by the understanding that scientific knowledge is constantly evolving, with new ideas, emerging challenges and fresh perspectives continuing to shape and refine existing knowledge.
The conference will continue scholarly discussions on the relationship between democracy and development in Africa, bringing together experienced academics and practitioners to share practical insights and research on the subject.

Among the key questions to be examined are the major challenges confronting development and democracy across the continent, as well as whether improving access to food and expanding social services should take precedence over political freedom and democratic governance.
The two-day conference is scheduled as follows:
- Friday, July 17, 2026 – Keynote lecture and dialogue session.
- Saturday, July 18, 2026 – Plenary sessions.
The event will be held at the Conference Auditorium of the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The Director of the Institute of African Studies, Professor Dr. Tochukwu Omenma, invited academics, researchers, policymakers, students and other interested participants to attend the conference and contribute to discussions on the future of democracy and development in Africa.
