The Director, National Orientation Agency, Osun State, Mrs Kikelomo Ahmed represented by Mr Afolabi Adeyemi has on Thursday, emphasised the need for a value re-orientation among youths and Corps Members. 

Myschoolnews reports Afolabi bemoaned the current decadence in societal values explaining that youths now pride themselves in many ills and immoral acts such as cultism, cybercrime, drug abuse, indecent dressing, etc. Calling for an urgent change, he defined values as ethical principles by which individuals or community work, live and interact.

 He also noted that value re-orientation will require doing things anew and sticking to culturally acceptable behaviours in the society. 

 

He further, addressed some causes of this decadence in societal values. He referred to poor parenting and impunity as major causes. He explained that negligence of disciplinary actions against law breakers equally serves as encouragement for others to do same.

He described the lecture as an ideological appeal and referenced that the skills Corps Members will be exposed to in their service year is geared towards making them marketable. According to him, the degree of orderliness instilled in the Nigerian youth can only be attained by self control and obedience to regulations and authority.

 

Concluding, he echoed the need for early inculcation of patriotism and values in youths. He also appraised the Nigerian government for its pursuit of different re-orientation programme. Afolabi noted that organisations such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Economics and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have also been central to the instilling of values in the nation.
