Why Nigerians Must Look Beyond Bagging Varsity Degrees; FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has urged citizens to focus on more than just obtaining university degrees, stressing the importance of investing in skills acquisition and technological advancements to enhance productivity. This call to action was made by Baffa Dan Agundi, the Director General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), during the National Unity Robot Project held at the National Stadium in Abuja.

Agundi emphasized the increasing significance of technical skills in today's fast-paced economy. Speaking at the event, he pointed out that many skilled artisans, such as vulcanizers and mechanics, often earn more than university graduates employed in civil service positions.

He remarked, “I believe Nigeria needs something like this robotic program. Parents are rushing their kids to universities for degrees that may not yield anything, while their creativity and productivity can be nurtured in other educational settings.”

Agundi's comments highlight a growing concern about the value of traditional university education compared to practical skills. He noted that many small and medium enterprises (SMEs) thrive without the need for formal degrees, asserting that a street vulcanizer can often earn more than a graduate working for a government agency.

The NPC's initiative seeks to encourage a shift in mindset among Nigerians, prioritizing productivity-enhancing skills over mere degree acquisition. As the job market evolves, adapting to these changes becomes crucial for the nation's economic growth.
