A 16-year-old student of Pen Resource Academy in Gombe, has clinched the title of top scorer in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results from Gombe State. Her consistent performance culminated in an impressive score of 348 in her UTME, surpassing the initial aim of 250-260, which was the cut-off mark for Medicine & Surgery. The rumor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria raising its cut-off mark to 300 spurred her to exceed her own expectations.

16-Year-Old Emerges Top Scorer in Gombe State UTME Results

In a remarkable display of academic prowess, Kawthar Shehu Toro, a 16-year-old student of Pen Resource Academy in Gombe, has clinched the title of top scorer in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results from Gombe State. The results were recently released by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), highlighting Toro's exceptional achievement.

Kawthar’s journey to success began in her early years at Dolphins School Zaria and continued through ABU Demonstration School. Her consistent performance culminated in an impressive score of 348 in her UTME, surpassing the initial aim of 250-260, which was the cut-off mark for Medicine & Surgery. The rumor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria raising its cut-off mark to 300 spurred her to exceed her own expectations. "I was aiming for 250 to 260. But then, I heard a rumour that Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria was extending its cut-off mark to 300, so I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone and work to achieve more to get the cut-off mark", she added.

Kawthar attributes her achievement to a combination of factors: the guidance of her teachers, a conducive study environment, and a disciplined study pattern. She leveraged technology, using an app called Test Gorilla for mock JAMB practice, which helped her improve from an initial score of 230 to her final score. "Our school introduced us to an app called Test Gorilla, where you can answer past questions like a JAMB mock practice". 

She explained that she started studying months before the exam date was set, often sacrificing sleep and leisure. Her efforts were eventually crowned with her result. She also remarked that she has always topped the class explaining that her philosophy in self improvement has been her major drive. She also added that she utilized a balanced approach towards reading by studying at night and during free periods at school.

When asked about her future ambitions, Toro expressed her interest to study Medicine and Surgery at ABU Zaria, She expresses that she has passion for the medical field. She also harbors entrepreneurial ambitions while recognizing the need for versatility in Nigeria’s job market. "No one depends on one job in Nigeria now, so I feel like going into entrepreneurship and perhaps trading. Even though I was told that medicine is time-consuming", she added. 

Kawthar Shehu Toro’s story is one of determination, discipline, and a thirst for knowledge. Her success serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with the right mindset and support, achieving one’s goals is indeed possible.
