The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has emphasized the importance of accreditation in improving the educational system.
Speaking during a visit by accreditation officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Obi stated that the process is essential in evaluating academic programmes and offering recommendations to improve them.
She assured the NUC team that the university’s three programmes—Banking and Finance, Adult Education, and Agricultural Education—are ready for assessment. She praised the NUC for maintaining the accreditation process, noting that it plays a significant role in ensuring the continued growth and development of the university system.
Earlier, Prof. Cordelia Ebenebe, who represented the NUC, thanked the university management for providing a conducive atmosphere for the exercise. She emphasized the importance of checks and balances in the system, warning that their absence could lead to a decline in academic standards. Prof. Ebenebe also pointed out that accreditation not only improves educational standards but also enhances institutional rankings. She urged the Heads of Departments for the three programmes to ensure that all necessary information is provided to facilitate a smooth evaluation process.
The accreditation exercise is a crucial step in ensuring that the university’s academic offerings meet the required national and international standards.
