ADSU Intensifies Fight Against Sexual Harassment and Indecent Dressing with Second Phase of "Kill the Virus" Campaign

The Vice-Chancellor of Adamawa State University, Mubi, Augustine Clement, on Thursday, 6th March 2016, intensified efforts to combat sexual harassment and indecent dressing through a sensitization programme aimed at promoting awareness, accountability, and mutual respect within the university community.

The programme, organized by the Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition and Dress Code Committee, was designed to encourage students and staff to speak up against harassment while reinforcing the institution’s zero-tolerance policy toward any form of misconduct.

The sensitization initiative also marks the second year since Adamawa State University established a committee to promote awareness on sexual harassment prohibition and dress code on campus a move that is already yielding positive transformation within the institution.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s campaign, “Sexual Harassment: A Deadly Virus on Campus – Kill It,” the Vice-Chancellor, reiterated that the University Management stands firmly behind the Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition and Dress Code Committee. He assured that his administration would continue to strengthen reporting mechanisms, protect whistle blowers, and ensure fairness and transparency in addressing such cases.

He further urged students to report cases of harassment without fear, while also calling on staff to uphold integrity, avoid abuse of authority, and serve as role models and guardians of students’ welfare.

In her remarks, the Guest Speaker and Commissioner of the Adamawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Neido Geoffrey Kofulto, expressed concern over the rising cases of sexual harassment in society, describing the act as a serious offence punishable by law. 

She commended Adamawa State University for initiating the awareness campaign, describing it as timely. She also assured that the Adamawa State Government has established mechanisms through the ministry for victims to report such cases.

The event featured a series of presentations on combating sexual harassment, prevention strategies, and reporting mechanisms.

Speakers at the occasion included the Chairperson of the Sexual Harassment Prohibition and Dress Code Committee, Prof Altine Justine Madugu, Prof Ezekiel Williams, and a representative of the IRC GBV Sub-Sector, Mubi, who highlighted reforms aimed at promoting discipline, character development, and strong moral values within the institution.

The awareness campaign was climaxed with a playlet performed by students, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by the Registrar of the University.
