Ahmadu Bello University IAR Holds Media Training Workshop on Tela Maize
The Head of Media Unit of IAR, Mr. Yakubu Dodo, emphasized that the workshop aimed to equip participants with skills to effectively communicate facts about GM crops and enhance public understanding of GM technology.
The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) organized a media training workshop on responding to issues surrounding genetically modified (GM) crops, focusing on Tela Maize, on Thursday, 21st November 2024, at the IAR Conference Hall, Samaru, Zaria.
The Executive Director of IAR, Prof. Ado Yusuf, who was represented by Deputy Director Prof. Nafiu Abdu, highlighted the importance of the workshop in addressing misconceptions and media propaganda surrounding Tela Maize, particularly the claim that it is harmful to human health.

Presentations at the workshop included discussions on the intersection of science and media, with resource persons such as Mr. Onche Odeh, who stressed the importance of clear communication of scientific concepts, and Mr. Vincent A. Yusuf, an agricultural reporter, who discussed how media framing affects public perceptions of GMOs.
Mr. Alex Abutu, Communications Officer at the African Agricultural Technology Foundation, advised scientists to adopt audience-centered messaging and engage with media professionals to improve public understanding of GM technology.
