Ajayi Crowther University Student Triumphs as Best Actress at TSA Awards

Eyitayo Akinwale, a 400-level student of the Performing Arts Department at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), has been named Best Actress at the 2023 Theatre Students Awards (TSA) ceremony held in Lagos on Sunday.

Akinwale’s award-winning performance came from the play ‘Circus of the Freedom Square,’ which garnered the highest number of votes from the judges. This is her second attempt at the award, having missed out in the 2022 edition.

The Vice Chancellor of ACU, Professor Timothy Adebayo, while receiving the award, reiterated the university’s commitment to improving students’ skills and academic performance. He expressed confidence in the students’ ability to excel in competitive events due to the quality of academic and skill improvement activities offered by the university.

Akinwale emerged victorious from a pool of finalists that included students from several universities across the country. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the organisers and judges for recognising her performance and commended her lecturers at ACU’s Performing Arts department for honing her acting skills.

She recounted her journey to winning the award, stating that she was not discouraged by her loss in the previous year. She submitted a video of her performance in ‘Circus of the Freedom Square,’ where she played the character of Iyalode, a woman of tradition.

Akinwale, who started acting in primary school, was encouraged by an uncle to study performing arts due to her natural talent. She plans to focus on voice acting, body acting, and script writing after her studies, drawing inspiration from events around her.
