Akwapoly Rector Unveils New Signage for Mass Communication Department as Ibanga Isine Announces ₦100,000 Prize for Top Graduate

In a landmark event for the Department of Mass Communication at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, the Rector, Dr. Moses Umobong, officially unveiled a newly constructed, state-of-the-art signage for the department.

Ikot Osurua, the Rector, Dr. Moses Umobong, officially unveiled a newly constructed, state-of-the-art signage for the department. The unveiling took place on Friday, 6th September 2024, during the grand finale of the Departmental Week organized by the Association of Mass Communication Students (AMASCOS) at the Polytechnic Old Library.

The signage, a project by the 2023/2024 AMASCOS Exco led by its President, Hon. Dominic Umoh, was designed to enhance the department’s visibility and identity on campus. Represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Umoh, the Rector praised the Head of the Department, Dr. Unwana Charles, and the AMASCOS leadership for their dedication to improving the department. He emphasized the importance of the signage in providing clear direction and commended the association for their meaningful projects.

"I commend the leadership for this consistent effort, and I urge them to continue their excellent work beyond the Polytechnic," Dr. Umobong added.

During his keynote address, Mr. Ibanga Isine, Managing Editor of Guardpost Nigeria, urged students to embrace digital trends and adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape. He highlighted the importance of digital literacy, data journalism, multimedia storytelling, and social media engagement, stressing that traditional media alone is no longer sufficient. Isine called for curriculum reforms to better prepare students for the future of journalism.

"I encourage both educators and students to bridge the gap between education and industry. Students must be equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the media industry’s future," Isine said. He further announced a ₦100,000 prize to be awarded to the best graduating student over the next three academic sessions, aimed at promoting a culture of reading and academic excellence.

Mr. Nsibiet John, Chairman of Federated Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, also addressed the students, emphasizing the need to adapt to technological advancements and develop effective communication skills. He urged students to approach digital communication with integrity and empathy, while applauding the AMASCOS leadership for their successful administration.

Earlier, Dr. Unwana Charles expressed his gratitude to the Rector and the AMASCOS leadership for their support, praising the new signage as a valuable addition to the department. He encouraged students to engage fully in both academic and extracurricular activities to foster personal and professional growth.

Hon. Dominic Umoh, AMASCOS President, reflected on the association’s achievements during his tenure and thanked the department’s staff and students for their support. He reiterated his commitment to furthering the goals of AMASCOS and looked forward to future growth and innovation.

The event also featured a carnival float, award presentations, certificates for photography trainees, cultural displays, and artist performances, adding to the celebration of the department's progress and unity.
