A student of the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT Minna), Niger State, Oluwaseyi Adebayo, has died after falling into a fishpond while hiking with his colleagues. The 400-level student from the Department of Animal Production was hiking on August 10 when he slipped from a hilltop and landed in a fishpond, resulting in his death.
Local residents initially refused to release Adebayo’s body to university authorities, demanding rituals to prevent similar incidents. The university declined to perform the rituals, but concerned individuals eventually paid the required amount and provided a white ram for the sacrifice.
University spokesperson Lydia Legbo stated that the university was unaware of the incident and could not comment. The Student Union Government (SUG) confirmed the incident in a condolence message, expressing their sorrow and urging students to avoid outdoor events near waterways.
The Niger State Police Command spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, said the incident was not reported to the police.
