ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke address the Japa syndrome so the trend does not erode the public education system which is already in a fragile state. 

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has tasked Nigerians and non-governmental bodies in the country to rise to the occasion of standing with and defending the cause of public education, saying the sector is in the state of near collapse because of the 'Japa syndrome'.

Osodeke also called for a check of the ‘Japa’ syndrome so the trend does not erode the public education system which is already in a fragile state. He spoke at the weekend while addressing his members at the 22nd National Delegates Conference, NDC, of ASUU held at the University of Jos, Plateau State.

Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke remarked that other nations have been devoting up to 25% or more of their annual budgetary allocations to education, at no time in the life of this administration has the government gone up to 8%. Indeed, for much of the period of this regime, education, especially at the tertiary level, has been on oxygen merely gasping for breath.The Union enjoins individual Nigerians and non-governmental bodies within the country to rise to the occasion of standing with and defending the cause of public education.
