Aya Gertrude Konan’s transition from a flight attendant to becoming the first female commercial pilot in Ivory Coast is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of dreams, regardless of the challenges.

Originating from Ivory Coast, Aya began her aviation career as a flight attendant in April 2013. However, her ambitions reached far beyond the airplane cabin. From a young age, she nurtured a dream of becoming a pilot, fueled by a deep-seated passion for aviation.

Despite facing financial constraints, with pilot training costs amounting to 60 million. Aya remained undeterred. Instead, she seized an opportunity that arose in the latter part of 2014 when Air Cote D'Ivoire announced a competition aimed at recruiting and training young Ivorians for careers in aeronautics, including pilots and aircraft mechanics.

Notably, she was the only woman among the selected candidates.

Embarking on a challenging training journey, Aya’s determination and tenacity drove her forward. She underwent theoretical training at the National Polytechnic Institute Houphouët Boigny (INPHB) in Cote d’Ivoire, followed by practical training in France, dedicating herself to acquiring the skills necessary to command the skies.

After two years and four months of rigorous training, Aya reached a significant milestone, becoming the first female civilian airline pilot trained by the State of Côte d’Ivoire. She also earned a qualification to fly a Bombardier Dash Q400, cementing her status as a trailblazer in her field.
