Babcock University, one of Nigeria’s leading private institutions, will celebrate its Founder’s Day on September 17, 2024, marking 65 years of transformative education since its establishment as the Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA) on September 17th 1959. Founded by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to train church workers from across West Africa, ACWA began with only seven ministerial students.
Over the decades, the institution has grown significantly. By 1966, it graduated its first set of Bachelor of Arts degree holders, and expanded its curriculum to include Business Administration and Pre-Nursing courses. In 1975, ACWA became the first Nigerian institution to affiliate with Andrews University, USA, enabling it to award internationally recognized Bachelor of Arts degrees.
In 1999, Babcock University became a pioneer among private universities in Nigeria. It launched its postgraduate school in 2010 and established a medical school in 2012, further cementing its reputation for academic excellence. As the pace-setter in private education delivery, Babcock has earned an award as the Best Private University in Africa.
This year’s Founder’s Day celebration will center on the university’s core values of knowledge, truth, and service. The theme emphasizes the internal unity of the Babcock community, surpassing external challenges. The event will provide a platform for reflecting on Babcock’s rich history and its ongoing mission to inspire hope and positively impact society.
The celebration promises to be a milestone in honoring the university’s past, while looking toward a future of continued excellence and innovation in education.
