The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has instructed his operatives to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the stabbing death of Joseph Agabaidu, a 500-level Geology student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. The late student was fatally stabbed while attempting to recover his girlfriend's snatched handbag from robbers.

CP Mohammed issued the directive during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Bauchi State Students (NUBAS) and the Student Union Government of ATBU. He assured the student leaders that every effort was being made to bring the assailants to justice.

Joseph Agabaidu's tragic death occurred on Saturday, December 2, 2023, when unknown persons snatched a handbag containing a mobile phone from his girlfriend, Philomena Ahobee. In an attempt to retrieve the stolen handbag, Agabaidu was stabbed on the left side of his chest. Despite being rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for treatment, he was pronounced dead while on admission.

The police responded to the incident by quelling a protest staged by students in reaction to the gruesome murder. The Commissioner of Police condemned the violent protest and commended the police for swiftly containing the situation.

The student leaders, representing NUBAS and the ATBU Student Union Government, presented a letter of request to CP Mohammed, seeking increased security presence in their communities. In response, the Commissioner assured them that the command would deploy both intelligence and operational personnel to the affected areas.

In light of the directive for the mopping up of criminal elements around the Yelwa Axis, the police have arrested five suspected miscreants, including an 18-year-old girl. The arrests were made on charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, receiving stolen property, and causing grievous hurt.

CP Mohammed emphasized the commitment of the police to ensure the safety of students and residents, vowing to intensify efforts until the perpetrators of Joseph Agabaidu's murder are apprehended.
