Celebrating the Pioneering Achievements of UNILAG's First Female Vice-Chancellor on Her Birthday

In a grand celebration, the University of Lagos honors the exemplary leadership and accomplishments of its 13th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, FAS, OON, on the occasion of her birthday. As the first woman to hold this prestigious position in our alma mater, Professor Ogunsola stands as a beacon of inspiration and distinction.

A distinguished academic, Professor Ogunsola earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Ife in 1982. Her academic journey continued with a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology with Distinction from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, in 1990. Further expanding her expertise, she obtained a Diploma in Biomedical Techniques from the University of Wales, College of Medicine, Cardiff, in 1993, and in 1998, she earned her Ph.D. from the same institution.

Professor Ogunsola, a renowned figure in Medical Microbiology, has not only excelled in academia but has also contributed significantly to the academic community. Joining the University of Lagos as a Lecturer I in 1995, she steadily climbed the ranks, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 1997, an Associate Professor in 2004, and finally, a full Professor in 2008.

Her impact extends beyond the lecture halls; since 1998, Professor Ogunsola has secured over N4 billion in teaching, research, and capacity-building grants for the University of Lagos. With thirteen completed grants and eight ongoing projects, her dedication to advancing education and research is evident.

Breaking barriers, Professor Ogunsola made history as the first female Provost of the College of Medicine, serving from 2013 to 2016. In 2017, she continued to blaze trails as the inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), spearheading the first-ever UNILAG International Week.

In the challenging year of 2020, Professor Ogunsola emerged as the first female Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG. Her subsequent appointment as the 12th Vice-Chancellor marked a triumphant culmination of her outstanding career.
