College of Education and Legal Studies Nguru Mourns Victims of Tragic Canoe Mishap in Garbi Village

The Management, staff, and students of the College of Education and Legal Studies (COELS), Nguru, have expressed deep sorrow following a devastating canoe capsizing incident in Garbi Village that resulted in significant loss of life. 

The tragedy occurred on the evening of Saturday, January 3, 2026, when an overloaded vessel carrying 52 passengers capsized while traveling from Adiyani town in Jigawa State to Garbi town in the Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State. As of January 5, 2026, officials have confirmed that at least 25 people have died, with several others still missing.

In a formal condolence message, the Provost of the College, Prof. Ali Usman Manzo, extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the entire academic community to the bereaved families and the people of Garbi Village. He described the event as a "painful tragedy" that has brought immense grief to the local community.
