College of Medicine Provost Laments Female Dominance in Medical Field: "Women Are Trying To Take Over"
"One thing I have noticed in the College of Medicine is that the women are trying to take over. We have noticed that in medicine, dentistry, and radiography. I think men are doing other things rather than medicine," Prof. Oke stated.

In a candid address during the 25th medical laboratory science induction ceremony at the University of Lagos, Prof. David Oke, the Provost of the College of Medicine, expressed concern over the increasing dominance of women in the medical field. Highlighting the performance gap between male and female students, Prof. Oke noted that women are excelling in disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, and radiography.
"One thing I have noticed in the College of Medicine is that the women are trying to take over. We have noticed that in medicine, dentistry, and radiography. I think men are doing other things rather than medicine," Prof. Oke stated.

The provost hopes that more men will choose to study medicine in the future, ensuring a balanced representation of genders in the medical profession.
The Registrar, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, represented by Mr. Gregory Uchuno, cautioned the graduating students against complacency, emphasizing that success in the medical profession requires continuous learning and the completion of necessary programs.
Moreover, Prof. Oke raised concerns about the "Japa syndrome," suggesting that recent hires in the medical field might be tempted to migrate abroad. The induction ceremony, titled "Staying relevant in professional practice: Strategies for professional development and career achievement," featured insights from Clinical Laboratory Manager Oluwafemi Omokayode, who encouraged the graduates to embrace challenges and commit to excellence.
The ceremony marked the admission of the new graduates into the medical laboratory science profession, with a call for them to complete their internship program and obtain a Full Practising License before enlisting in the National Youth Service Corps.
