NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has assured Corps Members of an increase in their monthly allowance following the implementation of the new minimum wage by the Federal Government. General Ahmed conveyed this promise during his visits to the Kebbi State Orientation Camp in Dakingari and the Sokoto State Orientation Camp in Wamakko. He highlighted the invaluable contributions of Corps Members to the country's socio-economic development and encouraged them to leverage their service year for personal growth and future planning.
The Director General emphasized the importance of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, urging Corps Members to acquire vocational skills that will enhance their self-reliance. “At least learn a skill while in camp and continue with post-camp training. Try to acquire a skill that would enable you to create jobs and employ others instead of just searching for jobs,” General Ahmed advised, noting that many former Corps Members have succeeded in various vocations.
He also mentioned the Scheme's partnerships with reputable organizations such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Unity Bank, Access Bank, and the NNPC Foundation, which provide loans and grants to Corps Members. General Ahmed reassured that the NYSC Management prioritizes the safety of Corps Members and advised them to remain security-conscious.
During the visit, Kebbi State Coordinator, Mrs. Aghata Banki Okolo, reported that 1,195 Corps Members have been registered, including 1,077 for Kebbi and 118 from Zamfara State. She noted that the Corps Members have positively responded to camp activities and that 240 camp officials are applying emotional intelligence in their duties.
Sokoto State Coordinator, Alhaji Yakubu Yaro Usman, informed General Ahmed that the Corps Members in Sokoto have shown high discipline and adjusted well to the camp environment. The camp hosts 1,488 Corps Members, comprising 682 males and 606 females.
