Covenant University Aims to Rival Harvard, Says Bishop David Oyedepo
Bishop David Oyedepo, Chancellor of Covenant University, expressed his ambition for the 22-year-old institution to become Nigeria's equivalent of Harvard University.
The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ogun State, Dr. David Oyedepo, has expressed his vision for the 22-year-old institution to become Nigeria’s version of the renowned Harvard University. This was stated during the university’s 19th Convocation Ceremony held at the institution's chapel over the weekend.
Dr. Oyedepo shared insights into the university's journey, highlighting its recent recognition in the global academic community. Covenant University was ranked among the top 801-1000 universities in the world in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, making it the only Nigerian institution to achieve this feat.
Reflecting on the inception of Covenant University, Oyedepo said he was driven by a quest to create a world-class institution that could stand out in a country plagued by frequent academic disruptions. "When I received the vision to establish Covenant University, I needed to figure out how to make it work. If there is not enough value to add, we have no business getting involved," he said.
Oyedepo detailed his inspiration drawn from Ivy League institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and MIT, noting that he researched their biblical foundations, funding models, and program innovations. His commitment extended to recruiting global experts to elevate the university's status.
Speaking on what makes Covenant University unique, Oyedepo pointed out the institution's strategic pursuit of its vision, emphasizing that the programs offered are custom-built and original. He stressed that character development remains central to the university's approach to education.
As a presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Oyedepo also disclosed that he has not received any financial compensation from the university since its inception in 2002. He emphasized that his efforts were fueled by a genuine desire to contribute positively to society, rather than personal gain.
Addressing the graduating students, he urged them to be contributors to society and remain committed to their purpose. “You are created to be a contributor. Find a place to contribute. You cannot be a contributor and be a failure. You will be part of the solution and not those who are problems,” he stated.
Dr. Oyedepo further encouraged the graduates to stay aligned with God’s plan and avoid taking shortcuts, affirming his belief in a "brand new Nigeria" on the horizon.
